Every September, Recycle Week reminds us to be more conscious of what we do with clothes and other garments that cannot be used anymore. Recycle Week aims to encourage the public to recycle more by demonstrating the benefits of recycling items found around the home. Here are some tips on how to recycle and repurpose your old garments.
Back in 2019, UK charity Oxfam launched its new Secondhand September campaign. The aim is to help rethink consumers’ habits and encourage us to buy secondhand or vintage clothes instead of new items as the autumn season begins.
Last month we caught up with Charles Ross, a well-known expert in sustainability and performance sportswear design based in the UK. Charles shared his thoughts on how the pandemic has changed the relationship we have with our clothes, and what both the industry and consumers need to do to ensure we have a sustainable future.
Over the last 20 years, Charles Ross, who lives in the UK, has been helping develop the next generation of designers. He now lectures at the Royal College of Art; acts as a mentor for the Design Council; sits on the Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP) textile committee. WRAP wrote the Sustainable Clothing Action Plan (SCAP), which formed the basis for the European Clothing Action Plan (ECAP); and contributed to Fixing Fashion (the UK Parliament’s report on fast fashion).
